When Life Gives You Lean Meat….
August 14th, 2006 by katyJon, on the wwpboards, linked to a story in the Twin Fall’s Tribune, http://www.sltrib.com/utah/ci_4178479, concerned with livestock losing weight from being in constant fear of wolves (or ‘wooves’), “terrified by the howls and footsteps of the stalking predators.”
I know just how they feel. ATVs and country music do the same thing to me. I’m no sheep, but I think we’d see the same phenomena if we put a boombox playing Tim McGraw music or Rush Limbaugh out in the pasture.
I think we should all be compensated, personally.
Sadly, the article quotes a biologist as saying that “proving that animal weight loss stems from wolf jitters and not some other factor in the vast matrix of variables that includes rangeland health, migration patterns and forage production, is difficult if not impossible.”
Who needs ‘data’ to back up a theory based on something as sound as the ranchers almost circus freak like ‘gift’ for assessing their animals weight come Yummie Up Time, give or take a pound? This doesn’t seem to be an issue for the news or for Dept. of Agriculture. And that’s okay. I’m a big believer in not letting facts fuck up a good story or getting paid. I just have some questions.
Will I have to pay more for this leaner meat? Now that there is MORE of it, can’t it be cheaper?
What other animals are slimming down? Might we see a species where the inverse is true and they actually put on a lot of weight? I have friends who actually EAT to comfort themselves in times of stress. It’s not pretty, and this I am particularly concerned with since I’ve read of Big Plans for Goats in hazardous fuels reduction. We can’t have morbidly obese goats on the fire line. Not without a side dish.
