Looks like ranchers will be using their message of old-time lifestyle against the army.  The army suspects that its current Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site can’t handle the PR of an upsurge in training as the soldiers pound the land into oblivion as it is.  The Pentagon has swung its crosshairs toward Las Animas County and is looking into condemnation laws. Apparently the conditions there are optimal for "realistic" conditions that exist in Iraq.  Given the long-term prospect for the land acquisition it’s not looking good for pull-out over there.  It’s not looking too good for the ranchers or the environment in Las Animas County either…

The Boise Weekly published an interesting article which illustrates how the mega-moo industry’s interest in the National Animal Identification System as a catalyst to re-opening markets overseas disproportionately burdens the little guy.  No doubt, but let’s hope the lesson learned isn’t that NAIS is ‘da devil.  Instead it is yet another example of how large-scale, corporate, irresponsible, and abusive production of livestock screws the family farmer/rancher, the environment, the taxpayer, and us all…
